STORY
"The worst nightmare is when it's impossible to wake up" (c)
The communist utopia without disease and aging has many dark sides. Metakarma, the subconscious operating supersystem on which the stable society of long-livers is built, has become a window into a world of horror and extraordinary psychic deviations.
At the center of the narrative is Rain, one of the five nullified, who has received a mysterious message from his past self. The main clue to the memories is an almost unbreakable Metakarma. Rain resorts to the one and most dangerous method of hacking, called unregimentation. Where will the search for truth lead? How quickly will Rain go crazy? Can he make one of the three psychopaths fall in love with him? That's up to you.
MONSTERS
CHARACTERS
[RAIN] The protagonist. A drifter and a burnout. Expelled from the University of Birmingham, a hacker not by trade but by calling. Loves rock music, addicted to substances, owns nothing but a red Les Paul electric guitar. Has started noticing symptoms of a condition known as 'span'. Rain isn't searching for the truth — the truth finds him.
[GREY] A chronic suicide survivor (7 failed attempts). A neurotransfer student who knows more than she says. Her gaze is like an abyss that gazes back. Frequently skips classes but is considered one of the best in her program. Exhibits a disturbing resilience to the effects of erasure. Keeps a real, live honey badger as a pet. Possibly dangerous — not just to herself, but to those around her.
[AMY] A government employee working in the capital as a memory operator. Energetic and sociable. Radiates optimism, constantly smiling and laughing. Has a sweet tooth. Persistently tries to get close to Rain — for some reason, she believes they were close before his erasure. But a smile isn't always a sign of happiness or mental stability. Behind the mask of a goofy pseudo-loli lurk monsters too grotesque even for a David Cronenberg film.
[RITA] A mysterious Komsomol girl, editor of the student newspaper. Burst into Rain's life like a bolt from the blue. Incredibly shy, fascinated by something called “anime” (no one knows what that is!). Dreams of creating her own visual novel about Japanese schoolkids (so you can read a visual novel while reading a visual novel).
[SIN] Third-year neurotransfer student. Young women are absolutely crazy about him. Irritable, secretive, and paranoid. Lives next door to Grey. Obsessed with conspiracy theories and collects material on span. Has access to illegal weapons, hangs out with vagrants, and frequently disrupts public order. His actual biological sex is questionable.
[CLAYTON] A self-isolated recluse and a technical genius. Holds the highest IQ in Birmingham. Lives in an apartment fully converted into a laboratory. Rain’s best friend. Possesses an extraordinarily deep understanding of psychotechnology and neuroengineering.
